MANUFACTURED MATERIALS

Manufactured materials are made from natural materials which have been changed so that the structure and composition of the original materials have been modified. There are many manufacturing processes that could be studied in the classroom by using secondary sources of information. For example, metals are refined from ores found in rocks and alloys are produced by combining metals with other metals or non-metallic materials. For example, steel is a combination of carbon and iron; bronze is coppercombined with tin. Synthetic materials such as plastics are made from products of the oil industry. As well as doing research from books and the internet, there is also scope for first-hand investigation of some processes. For example, the manufacture of ceramic products can be investigated if the school has access to a kiln. Also it is possible forchildren to make their own paper. Links could be made between this topic and history (see cross-curricular) by studying the development of materials
